Project Overview
BSFix is an end-to-end IoT-based automation system designed to revolutionize Black Soldier Fly (BSF) farming in Sri Lanka. It enables organic waste to be transformed into high-value products like animal feed and biofertilizer, while reducing emissions and manual labor.
The system automates critical farming stages — environmental monitoring, automated feeding, larvae growth tracking, and compost harvesting — via a smart sensor network integrated with a mobile dashboard.
Key Features:
- Developed modular IoT architecture with ESP32 microcontrollers for real-time data collection and actuator control
- Integrated thermal imaging and load-cell based feedback for growth estimation and smart feeding
- Enabled environmental control using humidity, temperature, and light sensors with automated triggers
- Built user-facing mobile dashboard for farmers to monitor, control, and receive alerts
BSFix not only makes BSF farming scalable and efficient but also contributes to sustainable agriculture, waste reduction, and circular economy goals in developing regions.
Awards & Recognition
BSFix won the Championship at SLIoT 2025, an innovation competition for IoT product development organized by the University of Moratuwa and IESL, and powered by SLT Mobitel.
